Amnesty Mulled For Phuket's Illegal Hotels

A mounting firestorm of media and Government opinion on the issue of a steadily rising stream of illegal hotels has elected public comments about a possible amnesty program.
Mounting pressure on the provincial Government by existing hotel owners, the Thai Hotels Association (THA) and environmental authorities looks to bring the long overdue issue to a head.
Key to the problem are uncollected taxes for accommodation, unsafe facilities and an unchecked development impact on island resources.
Hoteliers expect considerably debate on resolving the gap between legal and unlicensed hotels as what appears to be an unabated rise of new hotels in Phuket is creating fundamental concerns by all sectors.
