Fast Track For Myanmar Golf Market

Category: Tourism, Posted:08 Jun 2012 | 06:00 am

While all things Myanmar continue to be a strong emerging storyline this year, a recent read on the golf sector came as a surprise to me.
Writer Talek Harries penned a piece news piece which gave some amazing numbers – estimating there are over 80 golf courses in the country already and 12 driving ranges in Yangon.
Unlike other new tiger entrants such as Sri Lanka, Cambodia or even Vietnam, Myanmar's British colonial history was strongly founded on golfing facilities.
With such a large number of public courses, it will be interesting to see whether the government pursues a privatization policy in order to kick start redevelopment.
Whether Myanmar is Asia's next golf destination remains to be seen, but clearly the country has a jump start on the industry.
