Getting off the beaten track is often near impossible but here is a resort that has caught our eye, the Muang La in northern Laos.
With a jungle setting next to the Nam Pak river with 8 rooms in four wooden villas.
A natural hot spring is adjacent to the property.
Visits into nearby tribal villages, mountain biking or just getting lost for a while are all there for the experience.
The resort is part of a boutique offering of properties under the Khowan moniker with other locations in Bali, Zambia and Namibia.
