One of Phuket's nearby tropical island destination competitors Langkawi is expected to see a surge in airlift.
AirAsia has made public plans to create an international hub on the island.
Tony Fernandes recently said five aircraft would be based at the destination as an initial step.
Access has traditionally been a major impediment for Langkawi but this could be changing.
Two major new luxury hotels are coming up on the island – the St Regis and a Ritz-Carlton which are looking to induce upscale demand.
