PHUKET RETIREMENT MARKET Finnish Editorial Sparks Speculation
A recent editorial in Finland's second largest newspaper Aamulehti has sparked wide spread coverage in Thailand back of the authors comments that the Scandinavian country could build assisted residences for the elderly. Highlighting that a rapidly aging population 65 years and above will multiply over 100% in the next 50 years that Phuket with its warm weather, favorable cost of living and culture was very adaptable for Finns.
While outsourcing the high overheads to another country which the Government currently shoulder a large portion makes financial sense, many comments have come forth that distances involved from multigenerational families and other related logistical problems may be serious roadblocks.
In Asia the Japanese market is set to follow a similar trend back of low birth rates and serious issues about the internal capacity to care for its elderly citizens. As for now there appears to be little concrete plans on seeing formal initiatives hit the marketplace in the near future.
