The recent announcement that the government sponsored Phuket International Convention and Exhibition Center (ICEC) has sparked a series of politically charged comments by members of the opposition Democrat Party.
Yingluck Shinawatra's Cabinet effectively killed off the THB2.6 billion project with little explanation as to the reasons behind the move.
Both Phuket's political players and tourism figures have lashed out against the ruling party.
The ICEC had purportedly been put on hold pending its EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) approval. It's believed that other reasons are now being the full cancellation of the center.
