The Big Bamboo – Designing and Operating Sustainable Resorts

Category: , Posted:29 Aug 2020 | 06:00 am

C9 Hotelworks and Delivering Asia Communications have organized a virtual event as part of there Design Re-Invention series Volume 8 titled The Big Bamboo.

The one-hour deep dive into bamboo and alternative building materials for resorts will be held on Wednesday 16th September 2020 at 2:00 pm/Bangkok, 3:00 pm/Bali, Singapore. To sign up click on the following link.

No resort ever landed on the Conde Nast Hot List being ordinary. The Big Bamboo will take us on an extraordinary journey. Resort developers missed the memo. Why aren’t more tropical resorts using vernacular architecture that use indigenous materials, local traditional methods and unique one-of-a-kind designs? Get ready to see how bamboo and other native materials are changing the vision of what tropical design is, and should be. Listen to one of the leading global experts on bamboo design Elora Hardy of Ibuku in Ubud, Bali.

We will have two case studies of groundbreaking resort projects:

The duo of hotelier Andrew Dixon who teamed up with designer Miles Humphreys for the award-winning private island bamboo-focused Cempedak Resort. They will present a unique step-by-step approach to how, why, and what went right and wrong in creating a vernacular showcase icon.

Next, is Charlie Hearn of Inspiral Architecture and Design Studios diving into the Ulaman Eco Retreat in Bali. The back-to-nature approach went from using rammed earth, utilizing small-scale hydro-electric power, to harvesting bamboo from the site with local villagers to creating a total unique zero-carbon wellness resort.

We move onto how green resorts and hotels are creating synergies in the travel world with Delphine King from The Long Run, a membership organization of nature-based businesses driving sustainability. Learn more about the Global Ecosphere Retreats certification initiative and how this is tapping into a worldwide movement.

Lastly, architect Graham Lamb will give insights into alternative green building materials including bio-bricks from mycelium and how these ancient methods are regaining relevance in the modern world.
