A recent incident in China over the US Ambassador Gary Locke shunning a five star hotel in Hainan and trading down to less expensive has created waves in Mainland Chinese social media circles.
Locke who was attending a conference declined to stay at the Sofitel Bao Hainan as it was too expensive, despite many other politicians opting in at a high rate according to an article in the South China Morning Post.
Some advocates have applauded the move, while others are skeptical, saying it's politically motivated.
In China where luxury remains on the upswing, there do remain detractors as can be evidenced by the vocal comments online.
