What Exactly Is an Island?

It's been said that no man is an island, but I recently came across one of the better descriptions of this often elusive aquatic land mass.
It is "a naturally formed area of land, surrounded by water, which is above water at high tide".
There are of course holes in the one size fits all tag, primarily man -made or artificial islands.
Perfection of course remains unobtainable.
